Documenting your insured belonging
by Jack BuSha, JCB Home Video Services, LLC
Your home is your castle and your refuge. You take care of it to ensure that it protects you and your family. Homeowners insurance is a requirement and you pay the monthly premium without question. What if the reason you have the insurance really happens? What if you have to file a claim due to a fire, flood, windstorm, theft, or other event?
What would your insurance company REQUIRE you to do?
They want a list of everything you lost down to the pots and pans in your kitchen, the clothes in your closet and everything in every drawer and cabinet in your home. Your insurance company wants proof of what you have.
Proof that you owned what you are claiming. If you have the pictures, (or an incredible memory), filling out the list is easy. If you don’t, try to imagine how you could remember everything in your home.
The preparation is up to you. Use your camera or video camera to record the interior and exterior of your home. Don’t forget the closets, drawers and cabinets from the attic to the basement. Create a DVD from that information and place it with your mortgage in a secure location. A safe deposit box is the best location.
Peace of mind by preparing for the worst cannot be overstated.
You have paid homeowners insurance premiums most of your adult life. Be aware of the risk of not being prepared to recover your life. Take out your policy and read it. Call your agent and discuss what he would need to do if you had the worst possible disaster occur.
Listen carefully.
Your home, apartment and/or your business are lifetime events. Please take the time to ensure their maximum recovery in the shortest possible time.
