Boomer Author Ronnie Dauber

by Lynette Benton, Polish and Publish

Baby boomer, Veronica (Ronnie) Dauber, hasn’t let life’s reversals become obstacles to her lifelong dream of writing. After a car accident six years ago made it impossible for Dauber to return to her legal career, she took courses to her polish writing skills, then went on to fulfill her “greatest passion,” writing novels.

Dauber was already an accomplished writer when she began her first novel, Mudslide, for young adults.

“At the age of 12, I won a regional competition for a poem dedicated to former President Kennedy. I had the honor of having a framed copy sent to the White House,” she says. “I’ve written many short stories over the years. I've also entered my work on writing contests and volunteered on various writing projects—always with the intent of some day writing professionally.”

For the past three years, Dauber has also been a professional freelance writer.

Mudslide is an adventure based on the experiences of Dauber’s children. “I wrote a story I felt would make an interesting read. It's crucial that teens have books filled with action and excitement that they can relate to, yet without profanity and sexual connotations. Omitting them doesn’t take anything away from a good story.”

Dauber’s second novel, Web Secrets, is an adult thriller/mystery, and she has several other novels lined up.

Dauber says she never doubted her ability to write novels. “I studied under a great tutor and learned how to write gripping stories. The most difficult part was editing them to death afterward,” she adds.

“The other difficulty in writing novels is becoming one with the protagonist. This is good because it allows me to have my characters act realistically. However, the stresses that each of them go through cause me mental stress, as well. But, it was a lot of fun and I knew how the stories would end, so I wasn’t anxious about what was going to happen next.

For Dauber, being a boomer represents experience and accumulated intelligence. “It doesn’t necessarily make me a better writer, but it does mean I’ve seen and done more things that are great to write about.”
