Reiki and how it can assist us as we age
article by Cindy Wolk-Weiss, Center for Healing Journeys
Reiki is an ancient Tibetan hands on healing art. Reiki means universal energy and is based on attunement to and transmission of the universal life force. Reiki teaches that dis-ease is an imbalance of energy. Reiki changes the vibrational frequency so the body can restore itself to balance and wholeness. It was rediscovered by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 1900’s though his own spiritual search and the discovery of a scroll describing the Reiki symbols in the archives of a Japanese Buddhist Temple.
The word Reiki simply means universal life force energy that works in harmony with the natural intelligence of the mind, body and spirit. In order for a person to offer Reiki sessions they need to be properly attuned by a Reiki Master (master meaning Teacher) to focus the healing energy. Once attuned the Reiki energy will flow when the practitioner makes the intention. Dr. Mehmet Oz recently revealed on his show his use of Reiki in his own life. He has been using Reiki healing energy for many years in his operation room and his wife, Lisa is a reiki master. It’s exciting to hear about Reiki on national TV as more people can learn of this form of energy healing.
A practitioner of Reiki can assist you in restoring the energy pathways within you that often gets blocked by challenges in life. As the Reiki energy flows you will sense its unconditional love lifting your spirits, relaxing your body and freeing your mind from the challenges of daily living. Some of the many benefits of Reiki are relief of chronic pain, headaches, and stress related illness, emotional release and spiritual growth. This healing method brings balance & harmony into your life. Reiki deepens the inner journey addressing the body, mind and spirit. I find that Reiki heals what is most appropriate for each individual at the time of the healing. Healing means that the person becomes balanced and their emotional, mental and spiritual selves come into alignment – they become ‘whole’. As we age we often deal with more body discomfort in the form of arthritis, achiness, fatigue and more and this is where Reiki can be a wonderful compliment to medical care.
Reiki treatments typically last about one hour while you relax on a comfortable massage table. The energy being transferred penetrates clothing effectively thus allowing the client to remain fully clothed. Using light touch universal energy is drawn through the hands of the healing practitioner facilitating the body, mind and spirit's natural ability to heal itself.
People come for a Reiki healing session with a practitioner for:
- Stress Relief
- Personally dealing with an illness and wanting to add complimentary modalities to their care - In my experience Reiki have lessened the side effects of chemotherapy and other treatments, my clients have great energy, very little side effects, and grow spiritually.
- Interested in spirituality and healing
- To deal with chronic pain
- Healing for an acute injury or recovery from surgery
- To ease emotional distress
Reiki is about growing into your own potential, about healing the soul - the longing that we all know so well especially as we move into mid life.
When Reiki is given to a client, the body is filled with universal life energy so the body, mind and spirit can find its natural equilibrium. The only healer is the body…Working with this attitude both client and practitioner are transformed by the energy. Reiki is essentially a method for self- transformation.
Treat yourself to a Reiki healing session; it is the best way to discover how energy healing can be helpful in your life.
